Apple Tree Pruning & Ivy Management – A Unique Tree Surgery Project

On this project, the Elementree Care team were called out to assess and carry some pruning and trimming on a 40-year-old apple tree that had become heavily covered in ivy over many years.

The ivy had been left to grow naturally and had formed a dense crown within the tree, intertwining through the branches. Interestingly, the ivy had also created natural bracing that helped support parts of the tree’s structure. While ivy can sometimes cause issues, in this case it had co-existed with the apple tree for many years and had become part of the tree’s overall form.

The tree was also a valuable habitat for local wildlife. The owners told us they regularly saw birds nesting in the tree, and the dense ivy provided excellent shelter for them. Because of this, their priority was clear: they wanted the tree carefully pruned and reshaped

Our approach focused on selective pruning and sympathetic crown management, maintaining the tree’s natural shape.

The homeowners also explained that the job had become too challenging for their regular gardener, which is why they called in a professional tree surgery team. Timing was important as well — they wanted the work completed before nesting season, ensuring the tree would be ready for the next generation of birds.

This was a unique and rewarding tree surgery project, and we thoroughly enjoyed working on such an interesting tree that plays an important role in the garden’s ecosystem.
